In the 80's, her father died, as well as longtime idol Elis Regina. What probably hit her the worst however, was 2 days before her recording session for Yoko Kanno's Wolf's Rain soundtrack, Joyce's mother died. These were not the only deaths in her life, but they were the most prominent. Despite all of this though, Joyce has always kept her head up and has said that she uses the sadness to convert into the happiness in her songs.
