Uribe was traded to the White Sox by the Colorado Rockies on December 2, 2003 for Aaron Miles. He was acquired by the White Sox to back up Willie Harris as the second baseman, but eventually replaced José Valentín at shortstop and has been the starting shortstop since. On October 16, 2006 it was reported that Dominican authorities were seeking Uribe after issuing an arrest warrant for his connection with the shooting of two men.

According to authorities Uribe and a bodyguard are suspects in the shooting and wounding a Dominican farmer and a captain in the Italian Navy when the pair walked too close to Uribe’s jeep.
