Jules is recruited directly out of college into international banking, and therefore, is clearly financially secure at the beginning of the film. She lives on her own in an expensively-furnished apartment and wears fur and silk dresses. She flirts around constantly. However, problems arise for her when she finds out her stepmother (whom she angrily calls her "step-monster") is on her deathbed, her father has run off with a woman Jules' age, and she's left to pay for the funeral. Jules' life spirals downward as the film continues. Clearly addicted to cocaine, Jules gets into trouble right off the bat around town and at work. One night, while high, Jules calls Alec Newbury from the Van Buren hotel, saying she felt some Arabs were about to rape her. Alec comes to rescue her only to find the Arabs sitting around watching MTV. At work, needing the extra advances to pay for her stepmother's impending funeral, is told to go talk to her boss. Soon she reveals that she is sleeping with her boss and doesn't seem concerned, although her friends clearly are. After a party one night, she drives home with Billy Hixx, who is extremely drunk. She confesses that she needs to tell him a secret, but all Billy wants is to fool around. Jules is extremely hurt and throws him out of the car.

Soon, Leslie Hunter, who'd recently moved in with her to escape her own problems, comes to Alec saying that Jules had been play-acting for 3 weeks, and that she'd been fired and all of her things had been reposessed. In reaction, Jules threw Leslie out of the apartment and locked to door. When they go to confront her, Jules is seen in just a t-shirt, sitting in front of a freezingly open window. It is only Billy that gets to her, and with some comfort, Jules says that her stepmother is in a coma, and that Jules had just had her first real conversation with her. Jules finally comes back to reality and laughs, indicating that she is better.
