Julesburg is a town in Sedgwick County, Colorado, on the north side of the South Platte River. The population was 1,467 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Sedgwick CountyGR6. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,467 people, 613 households, and 407 families residing in the town. The population density was 449.5/km² (1,167.6/mi²). There were 699 housing units at an average density of 214.2/km² (556.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 89.03% White, 0.20% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 7.77% from other races, and 2.39% from two or more races. Jack Slade

In 1858 Jack Slade, a superintendent for the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company, was tracking down horse thieves, and Jules Beni was one of them. Slade caught up with him at Julesburg but Beni shot him five times. Everybody thought that Slade was dead and several angry townsfolk chased Beni out of Julesburg, but when they returned they found Slade struggling to his feet, somehow he miraculously recovered. The Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company was the parent company of the Pony Express. ...


Beni continued to steal horses from the Pike's peak Express Company and Slade vowed to hunt him down, but Beni decided to ambush Slade at Slade's own ranch at Cold Springs. But Slade found out about the ambush and along with some of his cowboys captured Beni. Slade was so mad at Beni that he didn't even bother taking him in but shot him dead while he was tied to a fence post. [1]

For a short period to time, Julesburg served as a stage station for the Leavenworth and Pikes Peak Express as well as the eastern terminus of the Pony Express division that extended westward to the Sweetwater River in Wyoming.
Julesburg was quite a settlement consisting of a number of buildings all constructed of hewn logs.
The name of Julesburg was also changed by Holladay to "Overland City" in hopes to change the town's image, that of being the toughest town west of the Missouri River, but the name just didn't stick.

Major Steven Long pronounced the northeast region of Colorado to "never be fit for human habitation other than the nomad races." By the 1820's though, trappers and traders were passing through the region in search of beaver.
Julesburg is also along the South Platte River that branches off the Missouri river a the border of Iowa and Nebraska and runs to Fairplay in central Colorado.
