Medem was born in San Sebastian, Basque Country and showed an interest in movies since childhood, when he would take his father's Super 8 camera and shoot at night, while nobody was paying attention. After college graduation (where he earned degrees in Medicine and General Surgery) he worked as a film critic and later as a screenwriter, assistant director and editor. After a few shorts he directed his first full length feature, Vacas ('Cows') for which he won a Goya Award. After this film he directed La ardilla roja ('The Red Squirrel') and Tierra ('Earth'), both receiving good reviews at Cannes. In his next movie, Los amantes del círculo polar ('The Lovers of the Arctic Circle'), which has been compared to the works of Krzysztof Kieslowski, he explored circular narrative and a taste for minimalistic textures that he then overcame in his next film, Lucía y el sexo ('Sex and Lucia'), where the plot dissolves into a very lyrical eroticism. After this film he took a tangent from his style to direct and produce La pelota vasca ('The Basque Ball'), a documentary film about the political problems of the Basque Country. This has made him highly unpopular in castilian Spain, and he can no longer make movies in his country of birth. Julio Medem is currently filming in France. INTERVIEW: Circles and Light; Julio Medem Escapes with "Sex and Lucia" (1592 words)
Medem: In the section of the movie that is the past, we shot the whole sequence in a week and in order.
Medem: If somebody is running away from something, I adapt to that sensation, where you're protecting yourself, and when I'm in that state, I don't want to know about the past.
Medem: To clarify, in Spanish, the title is "Lucia and El Sexo," because Lucia is that energy, that present, that escape, and the sex part is the past, so that's why it's in that order.
Wild At Heart: The Films of Julio Medem (686 words)
While his name is not yet as recognizable as that of his compatriot Pedro Almodóvar, director Julio Medem has steadily garnered a reputation as one the central figures in Spanish film today—more specifically, in the thriving Basque cinema that is too little seen in the United States.
For their help and support in bringing the films of Julio Medem to Boston we wish to thank Juan Romero de Terreros of the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C., the Filmoteca of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ricardo Peidró, Consul General of Spain in Boston.
In a nominally realist, rural setting, Medem creates an atmosphere of fantasy and poetry in which wild boars are attracted by female smells and widowers search for their dead, departed lovers among the stars.
