Differences Between the Junior and Adult Contests

  • There are some noticeable differences between the JESC and ESC. For example, in recent years every contestant has automatically been awarded 12 points in a bid to prevent the infamous "nul points" situation happening to the younger contestants. In the ESC each contestant starts with zero points.
  • English is now the sole "official" language used in the JESC. The ESC uses both English and French
  • In the ESC participants are limited to six performers on stage. However, in the JESC there is a limit of eight performers.
  • Although the main singers must sing live during the contest, backing vocals may be recorded onto the backing track. This is unlike the ESC where all vocals must be sung live.
  • The televoting must be presented by children rather than adults to stay in keeping with the "junior" theme.
  • Whilst the ESC has a song time limit of three minutes, the JESC has a limit of two minutes forty-five seconds. The song cannot last less than two minutes thirty seconds.
  • In the ESC the winning country automatically has the right to host the next contest. In the JESC the country hosting the next contest is selected well in advance of the preceding contest. The winner will usually only receive a trophy.
  • The back-up jury used if the televoting fails must contain eight people - four of whom must be under sixteen years of age. The ESC uses eight people, all over sixteen years of age.
  • In 2006 for the first time, viewers were able to vote for any of the songs at any time during the performances. Although this was questionable as it was thought the first performer would have an advantage over the other contestants[citation needed], the winner was actually the last performance, Russia.

The song must be written by the artist and sung in the national language (or one of the national languages) of the country. The song submitted into the contest cannot have previously been released commercially. The children singing also must not have previously released music commercially. Retreat Of Nations

* Cyprus withdrew just before the 2005 contest, because their song was said to be too similar to another song. However, they were allowed to vote and partipicated in the years following.

**Spain made a surprising withdrawal on August 8th with TVE's Director Javier Pons stating that "[The Junior Eurovision Song Contest] produces stereotypes that we don't share. It spreads dangerous 'rays' that form stereotypes. TVE is now looking for other formats that spread different values." The broadcaster has had good results in the contest, and said that the withdrawal was definitely nothing to do with these, but because of the format and ideals of the show. TVE said they'll be making their feelings known to the EBU in the search for other formats.[1][2] TVE may stand for: Televisión Española Township and Village Enterprise This is a disambiguation page — a navigational aid which lists other pages that might otherwise share the same title. ...

However on the 25th August, the EBU have stated that they have received nothing from TVE about a withdrawal, and will be in touch with them. If TVE have withdrawn, then they will still have to pay the entrance fee as the deadline of applications has already passed. [3] TVE may stand for: Televisión Española Township and Village Enterprise This is a disambiguation page — a navigational aid which lists other pages that might otherwise share the same title. ...

HRT of Croatia have announced that they will withdraw from the 2007, and future contests, as otherwise they would have faced a fine from the EBU as they did not screen the 2006 event live and did not broadcast it on a nationally available network. Broadcasters must screen the event live and on a channel available to the majority of the public.[4] Croatian Radiotelevision or Hrvatska radiotelevizija (HRT) is the Croatian public broadcasting company. ...

Future

The partipicants number has decreased significantly since 2004: in 2006, only 15 countries competed. In both 2005 and 2006, four countries have retreated, but in 2007, only two nations have retreated. EBU has promised that the contest will go until at least 2008 and with 17 participants for 2007 including debuts for Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia and Lithuania, it seems as if the future of JESC is assured with Cyprus being given the honour to host the 2008 edition and the EBU inviting nations to bid for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2009.

Eurovision Song Contest: Information from Answers.com (6850 words)
The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual competition held between active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), in which participating countries each submit a song to be performed on live television; then proceed to cast votes for the other countries' songs, in order to find the most popular song in the competition.
Countries may select their songs by any means they wish: whether it be an internal decision made by the participating broadcaster, or a public contest which allows the country's public to televote between several songs.
The impact that the Contest has on the host city is inversely proportional to its size: in Riga 2003, the city centre was virtually taken over by Eurovision delegates as they spent their week in the Latvian capital.
Eurovision Song Contest - Article from FactBug.org - the fast Wikipedia mirror site (2291 words)
Up until 2003, participation in the Eurovision Song Contest was dependant on a country having performed with a reasonable amount of success for the previous few years.
Following the dominance of English language songs, particularly Sweden's 1974 victory (with ABBA's "Waterloo"), a rule was passed in 1977 that the song had to be sung in one of the official languages of the performing country.
Many viewers of the contest view the event as a combination of camp entertainment and a musical train wreck (a fact played upon in the English-language broadcast with the sardonic BBC commentary of Terry Wogan) and a subculture of Eurovision song contest drinking games and the like has evolved in some countries.
