Welsh was born in 1972 in Nuneaton, near Coventry. He was expelled from school for swearing at a teacher and moved to London in his late teens. He was a keen musician and even at that age he was also a noted regular recreational drug user. He played drums in a number of bands in the early 1990's including an early line up of Suede where he would first meet Justine Frishmann. He was the drummer of a garage rock band Spitfire for a number of years.
