History

According to his official biography, K9999 has no actual birthdate, and his fighting style is his sheer power and "The Awakening."

After his battle with Orochi (The King of Fighters '97), Kyo Kusanagi was captured by NESTS and was subsequently experimented upon; they extracted DNA from his body with hopes of copying his power. The product of this research led to the creation of a group of biological weapons that could emulate Kyo's abilities. The Orochi in The King of Fighters is a version of the Kusanagi legend. ... One of the clones was K', a loner who had left NESTS to search for his past and to discover his future. To counter this, an 'anti-K' was created. This entity was named Kula Diamond, her genetic tampering enabled her to use ice in the same way K' used fire. Oddly enough, Krizalid was actually cloned from K's genetic code (thus explaining why he had memories of Whip and believed that she was his sister); he was killed in The King of Fighters '99. After the failure of Krizalid and the disappearance of K', NESTS decided to comb their research for errors. All of their creations were born from normal people with pre-existing and conflicting genes - what they needed was a malleable entity, from which they would build the perfect clone. The King of Fighters 99 is the sixth game in the King of Fighters series. ...

That was the premise behind the creation of K9999. Built from the ground up, K9999 wielded an exorbitant amount of power. His main purpose was to dispatch the rogue creations that had escaped from NESTS' grasp.

Personality

Though K9999 loathed his existence and detested social contact, he found a friend in a female named Angel. Angel was an agent of NESTS and was more interested in K9999's emotions than his possible potential. A man not to be tampered with, K9999 has a short temper and is easily driven to violence. K' is his ultimate rival, with a great hate against him. Angel (pronounced ahn-hehl as per the Spanish pronunciation of the word)[1] is a character in The King of Fighters series. ... Gameplay

All of K9999's moves are either short phrases or exclamations. He is the only character in the series to have moves named in such a fashion. In K9999's DM "You get lost too!", he morphs his arm into a gun and fires shots at the enemy. In certain versions of the game (likely depending on a nation's policy on censorship), the gun will be edited out as he seemingly points his fist at the opponent while the "gunfire" occurs.

K9999 and Tetsuo

K9999 is entirely based on Tetsuo Shima from Akira. He has Tetsuo's hairstyle and wears a similar cloak. His ability to transform his arm into a long tentacle closely resembles Tetsuo's mutations and both also possess the ability to create a psionic shield. Additionally, Nozomu Sasaki voices both characters. Tetsuo Shima (島鉄雄 Shima Tetsuo) is a fictional character and major protagonist in the manga and 1988 anime movie Akira, and could be seen as one of the villains as well. ... Fans of the series have simply referred to K9999 as "Tetsuo", either mockingly, or simply because of the inevitable similarities and easier to pronounce. As a special feature, in KOF 2002, K9999 shares a special introduction animation with the cloned Kyo Kusanagi. This is due to the fact that Kusanagi and K9999 share the same voice actors as Kaneda and Tetsuo respectively. For a while, it was believed that Eolith (developer of KOF 2001 and 2002) held the copyright for K9999. As it turns out, this is not the case. SNK, however, has expressed public disfavor for K9999, presumably due to the explicitness of his tribute to Tetsuo. It is unlikely he will appear in the future. Eolith is a Korean based company. ...
