KGYM first signed on as KCRG in 1947 and is Cedar Rapids' second-oldest radio station, after WMT.[1] They currently broadcast ESPN Radio programming, adopting the nickname "The Zone" in 2003. "The Zone" also carries Iowa State University sports, while it simulcasts KCRG-TV's morning and early evening newscasts and ABC World News Tonight for radio listeners. Prior to being owned by KZIA, Inc., KCRG radio was owned and operated by Gazette Communications. On July 10, 2006, Gazette Communications announced that KCRG was being sold to owners of another local broadcaster, KZIA FM 102.9, subject to FCC approval.
