Encyclopedia > Kababir

A mixed neighbourhood of Jews and Ahmedi arabs in Haifa. The Ahmedis broke off from Islam in the 19th century and founded the Ahmedi sect, originating in Iran. They settled in Kababir from Gaza in the 19th and 20th century. In 1930 they built the first mosque on Kababir hill, named probably after the Kabris plant. In the 1980's they completed a larger grand mosque with two white minaretes standing 34 meters tall, which dominate the low-rise skyline of the residential neighbourhoods on the ridges nearby. Their co-existance is part of the religious mosaic of Haifa, with Druze, Ahmedi's, Jews, Christians, Bahai, Muslims and others all living side by side peacefully in the city.
