Kabaty is the southernmost neighbourhood of the city of Warsaw, located in the borough of Ursynów. Until late 1980's it was a small village located to the south of Warsaw, between the city and the Kabaty Forest. The most notable landmark of the area is the Kabaty Palace, a small manor which served as the seat of the Biuro Szyfrów (Cipher Bureau), where the way to decipher the Enigma Machine was found. Other historical monuments include a mass grave of Polish soldiers of the January Uprising of 1863 and a monument to the 183 victims of the 1987 air crash that happened in the forest. The area of modern neighbourhood of Kabaty has been populated at least since 6000 years. However, itwas not until 20th century when it was finally joined with Warsaw. In 18th century the village of Kabaty, located on the Vistula river embankment, was bought by Elżbieta Sieniawska, widow of hetman Adam Sieniawski and owner of the Wilanów palace. The village was reconstructed after a plague that struck it and its' character was preserved ever since. In 1937 the Biuro Szyfrów was moved to the manor in Kabaty. The following year president of Warsaw Stefan Starzynski bought the Kabaty Forest for the city and created a park and a forest reserve there. Today the forest is officially named after him. During World War II the forest was a scene of partisan warfare against the Germans occupying Poland. After the war both the village and its fields located along the Kabaty Forest were nationalised and were thought of as a natural space reserve for the ever-growing city of Warsaw. In the 1990's it was urbanized with blocks of flats and villas and the agricultural production was dropped. Currently it is one of the fastest-developing parts of Warsaw, with lots of new houses constructed every year. Due to its proximity to the forest reserve, one of the most popular weekend destinations of Varsovians, the area of Kabaty is considered a luxurious and is popular among the middle class.


There are two Warsaw Metro stations located in Kabaty: the Kabaty train yard and the Kabaty station itself, located at the southern terminus of the first line, under the crossing of Wąwozowa steet and the Commission of National Education avenue.
