The Kabul Museum is a museum in Kabul, Afghanistan. It is chiefly notable for its collection of artefacts from the ancient world.
History
After the Soviet withdrawl from the country in 1989, there was extensive civil unrest in the country. One of the effects of this unrest was the 1993 bombing of the museum, which caused extensive damage to the exhibits. Following the bombing, portions of the upper gallery were looted. Some of the treasures within were moved to the lower galleries, which were much better secured with steel doors and locks.
When the Taliban came to power, they adopted a policy of suppression against the museum. Several exhibits were confiscated, and other exhibits, mainly statues, were destroyed in accordance with their hard-line religious philosophy.
