Location of Kabwe in Zambia

Kabwe is the capital of the Zambian Central Province. It was named Broken Hill until 1966. This beautiful small town, lies by the railroad line Lusaka-Ndola. The city has an estimated 210,000 inhabitants. In the city are tin ore, lead, cadmium, vanadium and manganese mining facilities. Kabwe's main industry was historically zinc, lead and silver mining, although these metals are now only extracted from old dumps. Prior to the closure of the mine, the town's resources included hydro-electric power from the Mulingushi and Mita Hills dams. The town is famous for it's football club, Kabwe Warriors as well. The town lies on the Great North Road and the railway from Lusaka to Kitwe. It is known for the Homo heidelbergensis remains found in the town. Kabwe's vegetation, soil and waterways are heavily contaminated with the highly poisonous metal.
A survey in former mine townships in Kabwe revealed that children suffered ailments commonly thought to be a 'local strain' of malaria, but environmentalists and health workers said they were caused by lead poisoning.
In the long term it is likely that Kabwe's mine dumps will have to be covered by vegetation or capped with concrete to prevent pollutants being blown across the town, and medical staff will need to be properly trained and equipped to deal with lead pollution.
