Kadaň (Kadan, Kaaden in German) is a town in North Bohemia. It lies on the banks of the River Ohře (Ohre, Eger in German). It has a population of 18,000. Although it is situated in an industrial part of the Czech Republic there is no major industry within the city and people usually work in offices or have to commute. There are two large power plants nearby (Tusimice and Prunerov held by CEZ company - see List of Czech companies). Kadan is a tourist centre with highlights being the Franciscan Monastry and the historical square with late Gothic Town Hall Tower. History

There are legends accrediting the beginnings of the town to Celtic tribes. Others talk about a castle on Uhost hill that might have been called Wogastisburg where a battle between Franks and Slavs occurred in 631. The battle of Canburg in 805 is also often mentioned in connection with the town. The first record is, though, from the end of the 12th century - the Czech prince granted the "market town" of Kadan to the Knights of St. John. In the 13th century the town was promoted to Royal City. It started to thrive and a new town was built with a castle and monastery of Franciscan Convetuals. There was a big fire in 1362.
