Kaizer Chiefs was founded in 1970 shortly after the return of the Soweto dribbling wizard Kaizer "Chincha Guluva" Motaung returned from the US where he played as a striker for the Atlanta Chiefs in the North American Soccer League (NASL).
Kaizer Chiefs is currently re-evaluating its market value, which was put at R400 million in 1999 and has since grown considerably.
Kaizer Chiefs have won the Vodacom Challenge Cup 3 times since its inception, and the team looks forward to competing in the Challenge at the next level this year (2006) with Manchester United participating.

Kaiser Chiefs' first big festival show was at the dual-site Reading and Leeds Festival on 27 August 2004 and in the following year, on 16 May 2005, they appeared at the Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf, Holland.
