Encyclopedia > Kalambo River

The Kalambo River lies on the border between Zambia and Tanzania. It is a comparatively small stream flowing into the southeastern end of Lake Tanganyika. Its main claim to fame is its waterfalls, the Kalambo Falls, which is Africa's second highest (after South Africa's Tugela Falls). The waterfalls are also an archaeologically important site because there is evidence that primitive humans began using fire systematically there some 60 000 years ago; primitive tools excavated from Kalambo Gorge were also radiocarbon-dated to be from around 300 000 BC. In 1964 the archaeological site was gazzetted as a national monument by Zambia's National Heritage Conservation Commission. Fishermen on Lake Tanganyika Lake Tanganyika is a large lake in central Africa (3° 20 to 8° 48 South and from 29° 5 to 31° 15 East). ... Kalambo Falls Kalambo Falls is a 772ft (235m) single drop waterfall on the border of Zambia and Tanzania at the southeast end of Lake Tanganyika. ... Tugela Falls are the worlds second highest waterfall. ...

The waterfalls' cliff-face ledges provide breeding grounds and nesting places for the rare, giant marabou stork.
