The Plot

The movie is about a road trip that goes horribly wrong. Brian Kessler (Duchovny) is a journalist determined to make a book about serial killers, and also wants to move to California with his photographer girlfriend Carrie Laughlin (Forbes). They decide to do both at once, by driving to California and visiting infamous murder sites on the way. To subsidise the trip, they take on a pair of travelling companions - Southerner Early Grayce (Pitt) and his child-like girlfriend Adele Corners (Lewis). While the two couples at first attempt to get over their obvious differences with each other, their trips to murder sites become progressively more eerie, particularly when it is revealed that one of the four is in fact a serial killer themself.


Trivia and Facts

Aside from the four regulars, there are no other major parts in the film.


The unrated version of the film has an extra minute of footage, including a more explicit sex scene between Brian and Carrie.


The murder sites are in fact related to the names of the actors in the film - Lewiston Ranch; Forbes, Tennessee; Davidson Mine; and Bradbury Textiles.


"Kalifornia" is also the name of a song on Fatboy Slim's You've Come a Long Way, Baby album. The obvious reasons for the comparison are that Kalifornia is about a serial killer and both it and NBK star Juliette Lewis as a serial killer's woman.
As Kalifornia progresses, the look of the film evolves into bright, colorful scenes, but that progression is in reverse to the emotional developments and crises of the film, which begin innocently and end in a quagmire of moral dilemmas and intense tragedy.
Kalifornia never received the attention it deserved, which is especially surprising in view of the cast.

I first saw Kalifornia (1993) back in the mid 90's, and I seem to recall enjoying it much more than I did when I watched it again last night.
While you will find moments that seem a bit cliché, Kalifornia is a powerful film that yields some decent acting with a very gripping story.
Kalifornia is one of my top 20 favorite all-time films, even though the X-files guy is weak as ususal....
