They stand east of the Tenandamalai, being separated from it by Kottapatti valley, and are perhaps the largest superficial extent of the hill ranges in Salem District. Different portions of the range have local names, but the principal divisions are the Periya ('big') Kalrayans, which attain an elevation of 4,300 feet, and the Chinna ('little') Kalrayans, reaching to little beyond 3,000 feet.
The river Vasishta Nadi originates from the drainage of these hills. The temple Kari Raman in the periya Kalrayans is held in great reverence by the Malayalis who inhabit these hills.
