The regency of Kampar with the main town of Bangkinang is mostly lowland except at areas bordering with the provinces of West Sumatera and North Sumatera which are dominated by biglands belonging to the "Bukit Barisan" mountain range which stretches along western parts of Sumatera.
Kampar area which stretches from the foot of Bukit Barisan down to the Straits of Malacca is characterized by many Malayan ethnic settler along with their various cultures.
In the upper parts of the Kampar and Rokan rivers, many elements of Minangkabau (dominant ethnic group inhabiting West Sumatera area) culture are present whereas in the downstream area of Kampar, particularly in the former Pelalawan Kingdom, the Malayan cultural elements resembling those in Siak and Riau islands are dominating.

The name Kampar came from the word kam pou which in Cantonese means precious gold in reference to its large tin reserves.
At present, Kampar is a fast growing township thanks to the Commerce and Industrial sector.
Kampar's newest pride is the Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) College's Perak Branch at Bandar Baru, loosely translated as 'New Town'.
