Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,381 km˛ (533 mi˛). 1,360 km˛ (525 mi˛) of it is land and 22 km˛ (8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.58% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 97.27% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,759 households out of which 34.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.80% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 23.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
