Kanabec County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 14,996. Its county seat is Mora6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,381 km˛ (533 mi˛). 1,360 km˛ (525 mi˛) of it is land and 22 km˛ (8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.58% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,996 people, 5,759 households, and 4,146 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km˛ (29/mi˛). There are 6,846 housing units at an average density of 5/km˛ (13/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.27% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 5,759 households out of which 34.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.80% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 23.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the county the population is spread out with 27.50% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 102.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.00 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $38,520, and the median income for a family is $43,603. Males have a median income of $32,329 versus $22,309 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,741. 9.50% of the population and 6.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.40% of those under the age of 18 and 10.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Chisago County is, like many other counties in Minnesota, very influenced by the Swedish immigrants that settled there in the middle of the 19th century.
In the county the population is spread out with 30.20% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 32.20% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 9.80% who are 65 years of age or older.
