Kane County is a county located in the state of Utah. As of 2000 the population was 6,046, and by 2004 had been estimated at 6,178. It was named for Col. Thomas L. Kane, a friend of the Mormon settlers. Its county seat and largest city is Kanab6. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,641 km² (4,108 mi²). 10,339 km² (3,992 mi²) of it is land and 302 km² (116 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.83% water. The Colorado River, reformed as Glen Canyon Reservoir, forms its eastern boundary. Arizona lies on the southern boundary. Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument covers much of the county. A rugged and inhospitable country of deserts, mountains and cliffs makes up the terrain, with breath-taking scenery in every area.
