The name Kansas City Comets has been used by two different indoor soccer teams.

Contents

The Original Team

The first Kansas City Comets team began its existence as the Detroit Lightning in the original Major Indoor Soccer League in 1979. After one season, the team moved and became the San Francisco Fog. However the very next season, the team was in Kansas City. The team would remain there until 1991 when it ceased operations.

The Current Team

The team that is now called the Kansas City Comets has a long complex history. The team was founded in 1989 as the Atlanta Attack as part of the then America Indoor Soccer Association, which became the National Professional Soccer League the next year. In 1991, the team was moved to Missouri as the Kansas City Attack to replace the recently folded Kansas City Comets of the original MISL. In 2001, the NPSL disbanded and Kansas City with the five other remaining NPSL teams formed the new Major Indoor Soccer League. At that time, the Attack name was retired, and the team renamed the Comets.
