Encyclopedia > Kappa Alpha

The Kappa Alpha Order is a collegiate order of Christian knights. It is not to be confused with the Kappa Alpha Society, of who the Order initially sought to become a chapter. Kappa Alpha Order was derived from a smaller fraternity, Phi Kappa Chi. Phi Kappa Chi was founded when one of the original founders, James Ward Wood, was refused entry into various fraternities at the school. The local chapter of Phi Kappa Psi protested, due to the similarity of the names. At this time the fraternity first took the name Kappa Alpha Order. Kappa Alpha Order was founded December 21, 1865 at Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Virginia. The four founding fathers, James Ward Wood, William Nelson Scott, Stanhope McLelland Scott, and William Archibald Walsh were influenced by Robert E. Lee, who was the school's president following the American Civil War, and formed the Kappa Alpha Order. The Order was kept alive by Samuel Zenas Ammen in subsequent years and the chapter spread throughout the Southern United States. It is a Southern fraternity, another factor which separates it from the northern-based Kappa Alpha Society. 1865 (MDCCCLXV) is a common year starting on Sunday. ... The forbearing use of power does not only form a touchstone, but the manner in which an individual enjoys certain advantages over others is a test of a true gentleman.

The power which the strong have over the weak, the employer over the employed, the educated over the unlettered, the experienced over the confiding, even the clever over the silly Ð the forbearing or inoffensive use of all of this power or authority, or a total abstinence from it when the case admits it, will show the gentleman in a plain light.

The gentleman does not needlessly and unnecessarily remind an offender of a wrong he may have committed against him. He cannot only forgive, he can forget; and he strives for that nobleness of self and mildness of character which impart sufficient strength to let the past be but the past. A true man of honor feels humbled when he cannot help humbling others.

Current News

Hurricane Katrina - At the onset of the crisis caused by Hurricane Katrina, Knight Commander Ben W. Satcher, Jr. asked National Chaplain Fitz Conner to prepare a prayer which was posted on the national website and remains posted today. Like most other fraternal organizations, undergraduates, alumni and local chapters of Kappa Alpha Order have responded to this crisis in a number of ways. In a four-pronged effort to help, KA today announced it has: Hurricane Katrina was the costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes in American history. ...

  • Joined www.fraternalrelief.org [1]
  • Partnered with The Salvation Army to raise funds for the relief effort (a link to the Kappa Alpha Order/Salvation Army donation page can be found at www.kappaalphaorder.org)
  • Encouraged local chapters to support local relief efforts in the collection of funds and goods that will be sent to hurricane victims
  • Begun the process of establishing a disaster relief fund which will be used to assist members of the Order who have been affected in this crisis. All funds raised by the Foundation for this effort will go to relief efforts. If there are funds left over once the crisis has abated, the Foundation will donate those funds to the Salvation Army or another relief agency.

Knight Commander Satcher commented on Kappa Alpha Order’s efforts to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina: The Salvation Army is a Evangelist Christian denomination, a charity and a social services organization. ...

This is a crisis on an unheard of scale. No one who has seen the images on television can be unaffected by it. I call on all KAs to support relief efforts of some kind, even if they are outside of the efforts taken by the National Organization. Members should give funds, goods, or volunteer their time. Chapters should combine to assist local relief efforts or contribute through one of the efforts mentioned. Members of the Order have a duty to perform community service and there is no greater call for service than what has fallen upon the people on the Gulf Coast.
