Karen Hesse, born August 29, 1952 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, is an author of children's literature and literature for young adults. She is best known as a writer of historical fiction. She has received many awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 2002, and the 1998Newbery medal for her book Out of the Dust, a story of a girl living through the dust bowl of the depression. The central character accidently injures her pregnant mother by throwing a bucket of flaming kerosene on her. After the mother dies, Billie Jo and her father try to go on with their lives. Hesse tackled a more disturbing subject in her book Witness. Here, the newly invigorated Klan of the 1920's tries to take over a small Vermont town. In Witness Hesse continues the distinctive poetic/prose style she pioneered in "Out of the Dust." Karen attended Towson State College as a theater major, but transferred after two semesters to the University of Maryland, where she eventually earned a B.A. in English with double minors in Psychology and Anthropology.
