Kokkola (Karleby in Swedish) is a town and municipality of Finland.


It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Central Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 35,756 (2003) and covers an area of 332.44 km² of which 4.92 km² is water. The population density is 107.6 inhabitants per km².


The town of Kokkola/Karleby was chartered in 1620.


The municipality is bilingual with approximately 80% being Finnish and 20% Swedish speakers.

Naming hassle of this place is explained by municipal merging in 1977, when [Kokkola (Gamla Karleby)] and [Kaarlela (Karleby)] became one [Kokkola (Karleby)].
So this is it, the water purification plant for former municipality of Kaarlela (Karleby).

Korplax lies north-east of (Gamla) Karleby, north of the river Perho/Vetil/Rödså [the same river with different names depending upon which parish/village it is floting through], and borders on the Parish of Kelviå (Kälviä).
Merchants in the Karleby area were not content with passive business in the home area but also undertook business travel to the south, west, and north.
In 1611, there were 35 soldiers attached to the large Parish of Karleby, according to the riksdag [governmental meeting] decision made earlier at Örebro, Sweden, as to how many soldiers each parish should supply to the crown.
