Casting

The character was originally titled Elizabeth Janeway after the famous poet. However, after Geneviève Bujold was cast, the character was briefly renamed "Nicole Janeway", for Bujold's birth name. Bujold, who had mainly feature film experience and was not prepared for the schedules demanded by series television, dropped out on the second day of filming on the pilot episode "Caretaker", Kate Mulgrew, who had previously auditioned for the role but had been rejected, was brought in. In 2371, Captain Janeway took command of the Intrepid class starship USS Voyager. Their first mission was to locate a missing Maquis vessel last seen in the area of space known as the Badlands. While in the Badlands, the Maquis ship and Voyager are engulfed by a coherent tetryon beam that hurls the ships to the Delta Quadrant, 70,000 light-years away. The Maquis ship is destroyed while fighting the Kazon, and although Voyager survives the ordeal, there are numerous casualties.
