Ken Sugimori (杉森建 Sugimori Ken?) (born January 27, 1966 in Tokyo) is a Japanese artist most famous for being the art director of the Pokémon video game franchise. A friend of Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of the franchise, Sugimori is responsible for the bulk of Pokémon art and almost single-handedly designed the first 251 Pokémon (since Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, others have helped to design the characters). He is also responsible for designing many of the main characters in the Pokémon video games, such as Red, Blue, and the various Gym Leaders. Also among his work is a majority of early Pokémon cards. Ken Sugimori also helped with the design of Pokémon characters on the popular videogames Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. When Satoshi had the fantastic idea to program a new game, he gave the assignment of the graphic part to Ken. Once had the idea of a game in which it was possibile collecting some monsters, Ken began to take inspiration, for his sketches, from the bugs and the animals.
The 151 Pokémon of Sugimori were also successful in west, so much that Satoshi decided to create other games with a new generation of Pokémon.
The claws of Spearow, Pidgey and Pidgeotto (above) are an example; the claws are 3 in the sketches of Sugimori and 4 in the television readjustment.
