Kensett is a city located in Worth County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 280.

Kensett is located at 43°21'14" North, 93°12'31" West (43.353859, -93.208560)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²). 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 280 people, 131 households, and 77 families residing in the city. The population density is 70.7/km² (183.5/mi²). There are 143 housing units at an average density of 36.1/km² (93.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 100.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 131 households out of which 19.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% are married couples living together, 4.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.5% are non-families. 35.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.67.


In the city the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $30,500, and the median income for a family is $40,000. Males have a median income of $29,000 versus $20,179 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,601. 17.2% of the population and 14.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.1% of those under the age of 18 and 14.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

KENSETT — Shirley Maxine (Froning) Berge, 77, rural Kensett, passed away on Tuesday (April 19, 2005) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Glenda graduated from the State University of Iowa in 1957 with a B.S. degree in nursing and she took great pride in being an Iowa Hawkeye and in her career as a R.N. in geriatric nursing.
Interment was held at Elk Creek Cemetery in Kensett.
