Bolton became involved in far-right politics at an early age, joining the National Socialist Party at the age of fourteen. Later, he was involved with the Democratic Nationalist Party, another far-right group. In 1977, he was the North Island director of the National Front. In 1981, Bolton founded his own party, initially called "New Force" and later renamed the Nationalist Workers Party. He was New Force's sole candidate in the 1981 election, when it came last out of the twenty parties involved. Bolton later joined the Fascist Union. Still later, he announced the establishment of another group, National Destiny. This group was to be the New Zealand affiliate of the Liason Committee for Revolutionary Nationalism, a Strasserist (socialist/nationalist) alliance.
