She was born Margaret Hilda Roberts in Grantham in Lincolnshire, the daughter of a grocer.
She was educated at Kesteven and Grantham Grammar School for Girls and Somerville College, Oxford University, where she read chemistry; she also became president of the university Conservative Association.
Following a leadership ballot which failed to secure her a convincing majority after a challenge by Michael Heseltine, she resigned in November, and was succeeded as party leader and prime minister by her former protégé John Major.
