As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 9,869 and a density of 287.64 persons per km². The total area is 34.31 km².

On November 1, 2004 the municipalities of Aoya, Ketaka and Shikano merged into the city of Tottori.
Ketaka District was dissolved as a result of this merger.
