Khalifah ibn Sulman Al Khalifah (born 1936) is the Prime Minister of Bahrain. He is the uncle of the reigning King, Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifah, and has been Prime Minister since 1970, originally being appointed by his brother, the then emir, Isa ibn Salman al-Khalifa. He is still in power and is one of the longest-serving heads of government in the world also he is known to be the richest member of the ruling family and one of the biggest merchants in Bahrain.
In 1999, Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa succeeded his father as head of state and instituted elections for parliament, gave women the right to vote and released all political prisoners.
Bahrain is a constitutional monarchy headed by the King, Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa; the head of government is the Prime Minister, Shaikh KhalifabinSalman Al Khalifa who presides over a cabinet of 15 members.
Bahrain has a bicameral legislature with a lower house, the Chamber of Deputies, elected by universal suffrage and the upper house, the Shura Council, appointed by the King.
