As a pupil at the Sisowath lycée in 1959 he had stood second in the Baccalaureat in mathematics, a subject he excelled at and which he taught for several years at Kompong Thom. In 1964 he was appointed to the Phnom Penh Pedagogical Institute[2]. Duch was also deputy principal of Balaing College. He was arrested and tortured by Norodom Sihanouk's police for engaging in communist activities. In 1970 when he was released following the amnesty granted to political prisoners by Lon Nol, he joined the Khmer Rouge rebels in the Cardamom hills bordering Thailand. After the Khmer Rouge victory in April 1975, Duch's request for a transfer to the Industrial Sector of government was denied (Bizot, 2003).
