Kiawah Island is a town and an island in Charleston County, South Carolina, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 1,163. It is a major U.S. tourist site which offers expensive spacious villas, large highly acclaimed golf courses, beaches, and other attractions. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.1 km² (13.5 mi²). 28.9 km² (11.2 mi²) of it is land and 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²) of it (17.58%) is water. Kiawah was named for the Kiawah Indians who were led by head chieftain, Cassique. In the year 1670, Cassique leads English Colonists to settle at Charlestowne Landing.
