Kilronan is the principal town on the island of Inis Mór in the Aran Islands off the west cost of Ireland. The ferries serving the island call at the port, they run from Doolin in County Clare and also from County Galway. The main industries are fishing and tourism. Many come to see the forts and other amenities of the island during the summer. School children also visit, to improve their Irish at summer schools. As of 2002, 270 people live in the town. Kilronan is a controlled special school for pupils with severe and/or profound learning difficulties, some with additional physical disabilities.
Kilronan was selected by the NEELB to pilot Camera Mouse and found the technology a great benefit to particular pupils now able to type without using hands.
Many of Kilronan’s pupils are on a sensory curriculum now much enhanced by the use of switches, which allow pupils to control the environment around them and interact with bubble columns, wind machines, fans, projectors, lights, music and sound.
