| The earliest days of King's College were turbulent years for the country at large, so it was important to design the college not only as a place of learning but also as a defensive structure. |
| It was designed to have 24 student bedrooms, a cloakroom and billiard room, but in the eighteenth century the accomodation was gradually converted to classrooms and by the mid-nineteenth century an observatory was built on the roof. |
