King's was founded in 1495 by Bishop William Elphinstone under a papal Bull from Pope Alexander IV.
The earliest days of King's College were turbulent years for the country at large, so it was important to design the college not only as a place of learning but also as a defensive structure.
It was designed to have 24 student bedrooms, a cloakroom and billiard room, but in the eighteenth century the accomodation was gradually converted to classrooms and by the mid-nineteenth century an observatory was built on the roof.
