Encyclopedia > King Jungjong of Joseon

Former king, during the 14th century, of what is now Korea. He lived from 1506 - 1544, and succeeded King Yeonsangun because of his bad ruling. At one time, King Yeonsangun tried to purge the country of evil, by, for example, purging a student who had insulted King Sejo's usurpation in an essay. He collapsed Confucian principles, such as freedom of the press, and King Jungjong basically put these principles back into place.

King Seonjo was born Yi Gyun in 1552 in Hanyang, capital city of Korea, as the third son of Prince Deokheung.
At first, King Seonjo was a very good king; he devoted his life and reign to the improvement of the lives of the common people, as well as rebuilding the nation after the political corruption during the brutal reign of Yeonsangun and weak rule of King Jungjong.
The king was surprised; after refusing the Japanese request he sent a letter to Beijing to alert the Chinese that the Japanese were actually preparing for full-scale war against the Korean-Chinese alliance.
