American singer and pianist Nat "King" Cole may be best remembered for his later vocal recordings with lush orchestral arrangements, but his first successes came in the small jazz clubs of Los Angeles in the late 1930s.
In addition to this novel instrumentation, what set the group apart were Cole’s smooth vocals and his frequently playful lyrics, such as those heard here in his song “D-Day,” commemorating the June 1944 victory of Allied forces in World War II (1939-1945).
