The Kingdom of Zeal is a fictional nation in Squaresoft's Chrono Trigger. It floats above the planet in 12,000 B.C. avoiding the ice age raging on the surface below. Geographically, it consists of one major and three minor continents. A system of teleportation devices called "skygates" facillates transportation between the floating continents and also with the planet surface. There are three major cities: Zeal Palace (the capital city), Enhasa, and Kajar. Queen Zeal rules the kingdom as an absolute monarch. Zeal is paradise crafted by magic. All of Zeal's technology is based on magic, and only magic-users are perimitted on the floating islands; humans unable to practice magic, known as the "Earthbound", are enslaved by Zeal and forced to reside on the planet surface. The major source of energy for the Kingdom is magic channeled by Mammon Machine from the immortal alien parasite Lavos. Hoping to more fully harness Lavos' power, Queen Zeal, orders the construction of a large undersea facillity, the Ocean Palace, to bring the Mammon Machine closer to Lavos. However, bringing the Mammon Machine into such close proximity to Lavos accidentally awakens it from its underground slumber. Upon awakening, Lavos showers the planet surface and the sky with flame before burrowing back into the earth. Zeal is destroyed, and the mass of the floating continents crashing into the planet causes tremendous tidal waves that kill most of the population on the planet. Zeal's destruction heralds the end of the Age of Magic for humanity, but Lavos' awakening brings about the end of the planetary ice age. A few survivors among the Earthbound and the denizens of Zeal survive to rebuild civillization.
