With a view to remedying the electoral district's population variance while respecting public input, the Commission's final recommendation adds to the electoral district portions of Restigouche, Gloucester and Kent counties, increasing the population and reducing its variance to –14 percent, a reduced population justified under the Act by the electoral district's large geographic area.
The Miramichi electoral district is representative of the province's bilingual character in that the population in terms of both official languages was and remains almost exactly the same as the population province-wide.
The electoral district will remain one of the smallest federal electoral districts in terms of population with a negative population variance of 13 percent, a justified and reasonable variance given the rural nature of the electoral district, its dispersed population and geographic challenges impacting on access to and availability of elected representatives.
