This is a List of Portuguese monarchs from the independence of Portugal from Castile in 1139, to the beginning of the Republic in October 5, 1910. The list includes the Houses of Burgundy, Aviz, Habsburg and Braganza.


Previous to independence

  • Henry of Burgundy, Count of Portugal, then a fiefdom of Castile (1093-1112)
  • Afonso I Henriques, Count of Portugal (1112-1139)

The Line from Burgundy (1139-1383)

Interregnum 1383-1385


House of Aviz 1385-1580

Habsburg (Personal union with Spain)

House of Braganza 1640-1910
