Since the mid-1990s the Iranian government has embarked on an aggressive promotional and developmental campaign to tailor Kish as a formidable rival to Dubai. Steps taken in order to accomplish this include launching massive construction projects and programs designed to attract foreign investment and trade. Within the area of the Kish Free Zone, as it is known, the standard laws and mores of the Islamic Republic of Iran are far more relaxed than on the mainland, which has resulted in significant increases in the foreign tourist population over the years, as well as in international trade on the island. Scuba diving on the coral reefs, Jet skiing, fishing and beaches are popular tourist attractions. Bicycle-friendly routes have been built to go around the island. The inhabitants of the island are mostly Muslims. Image File history File links Kish-island. ...

| Kish Hidden Pearl In 1999, a group of hard-working Iranian individuals and experts decided to build an underground complex. After deep excavation they discovered a rigid coral ceiling. The construction included 300 artists and excavation workers. Initiated and led by Abdolhossein Khalife, the city includes restaurants, tourist resorts, and stalls. Also, there are plans that after it is finished, that they create mud pools and therapeutic locations for people to be treated since during excavation, it was discovered that the excavators did not get any scratches whatsoever. It was then concluded that it was because of the therapeutic marl in the coral layer.
