The Kittatinny Mountains are a long ridge across northwestern New Jersey. The highest peak in the range is High Point at 1,803 feet/550 meters, which is also the highest point in the state of New Jersey. The second highest mountain is Sunrise Mountain, located within Stokes State Forest. The Delaware River flanks the ridge for much of its distance, finally cutting across the ridge at the Delaware Water Gap just south of Mount Tammany. The Kittatinnies are actually a segment of the Blue Ridge Mountains; from Pennsylvania southward the ridge is known under that name. Most of the rocks that form the Blue Ridge Mountains, United States, are ancient granitic and metamorphosed volcanic formations, some exceeding one billion years in age.
In many places along the Blue Ridge Parkway, there are metamorphic rocks (gneiss) with folded bands of light-and dark-colored minerals, which sometimes look like the folds and swirls in a marble cake.
The range itself extends north into Pennsylvania; New Jersey, where it is known as the Kittatinnies; and lastly into New York where it becomes the Shawangunks.

The Appalachian Mountains are a system of North American mountains running from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada to Alabama in the United States, although the northernmost mainland portion ends at the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec.
In addition to the true folded mountains, known as the ridge and valley province, the area of dissected plateau to the north and west of the mountains is usually grouped with them.
In the folded mountains the coal is in metamorphosed form as anthracite represented by the coal fields of northeastern Pennsylvania.
