One of Klipsch's distinguishments is its long-running use of horn-loaded speakers. The company advocates the superiority of horns in their high efficiency and lesser total harmonic distortion, but some audiophiles decry horns as coloring the sound to the point of a perceived "honkiness". Early Klipsch designs utilized a metal-throated horn. The metal apature tended to exacerbate this phenomenon. In the 1990's, Paul Klipsch jr introduced the "tractrix" phenolic horn. It's new design alleviated resonances that colored the metal horns. Klipsch also moved away from silk to different driver diaphragm materials like phenolic, aluminum and titanium. Despite the lack of appeal in some audiophile circles, the Klipsch speakers can be ruthlessly revealing of poor stereo components and recordings. The horn sound is less compressed, (more dynamic) and realistic sounding than a multitude of the boutique "Audiophile" speakers on the market. The total harmonic distortion, or THD, of a signal is a measurement of the harmonic distortion present, that is, any departure of the output signal waveform from that which should result from the input signal waveforms being operated on by the systems specified or ideal transfer function. ...

The flagship of the line is the four foot tall Klipschorn, a three-way, fully horn-loaded loudspeaker built since the founding of the company; other Klipsch designs with similar principles are the La Scala and Belle Klipsch. Other models, like the Heritage and Heresy line, also use horn tweeters, but also utilize normal woofer designs. The all-horn loaded designs boast huge sensitivity and a very realistic, high impact sound. The horn-loading principal not only provided but ultra high efficiency, but a controlled directivity of the sound. Since 1949 Paul Klipsch Sr. had demonstrated that the Klipschorn could reproduce concert-level dynamics powered by as little as 5 watts per channel. The horn loading also reduced driver distortion. The Klipschorns 15-inch woofer only had to move a few millimeters to produce sound pressure levels over 110 decibels. Movie theaters use horn loaded speakers for demanding THX sound reproduction. The company also manufactures products for multimedia purposes; its ProMedia line of computer speakers has been sold since 1999, and it produces iPod-marketed speakers like the Bose Sounddock-like iGroove (with an angled form-factor) and the iFi, a scaled down version of its home theater systems.
