Originally a separate village a couple of miles from Leicester city centre it became joined to it by the area known as Clarendon Park during the Victorian period. It still though maintains many of the villages original features centred around the church of St. Mary Magdalene and therefore it has become a conservation zone.

It became a county borough when these were established in 1889, but, as with all county boroughs, was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 in 1974, becoming an ordinary district of Leicestershire.
