It is the only university controlled by the Ministry of Science and Technology not the Ministry of Education. The Institute's purpose is to provide highly qualified scientists and engineers, to perform mid- to long-term basic and applied research, and to provide a research platform for other institutions. It is generally regarded among Koreans as the best tech-school in the country, and it routinely recruits gifted sophomores of South Korean science high schools.
