Origin of the name

The county was named after the Hungarian Regent-President and revolutionary leader Lajos Kossuth who went in exile in USA after the defeat of the independent Hungarian forces in the war of independence of Hungary against Austria in 1849. Kossuth visited the U.S. in 1851. He was greeted enthusiastically and would gain acclaim as one of the greatest orators of all time. The renowned Ralph Waldo Emerson greeted him on his arrival at Concord and he spoke before the Ohio State Legislature on February 16, 1852. Kossuth was the second foreign leader (second to Gen. Lafayette) to address a joint session of Congress. He even spawned a fashion craze (moustache-less beard with TopHat) in the ever trendy US.
