The Krašovani (Serb. cyr.Крашовани, also Karaševci/Карашевци) are an ethnic subgroup living in the RomanianBanat around the town of Caraşova (Caraševo). What distinguishes this group of 5,000 people from their 30,000-strong Serb brethren is their faith. Whereas most Serbs (in Romania and in general) are Eastern Orthodox the Krašovani are Roman Catholic.
Their migration to these parts can be traced to the 1370s. Fleeing from the Ottoman onslaught they settled in the Catholic Kingdom of Hungary.
Their dialect is an archaic speech preserved in the area of Eastern Serbia, the Timok valley around Zaječar.
