Krotz Springs is a town located in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana on the Atchafalaya River. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,219.

Geography

Krotz Springs is located at 30°32'15" North, 91°45'18" West (30.537565, -91.754926)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.58% is water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 1,219 people, 490 households, and 339 families residing in the town. The population density is 272.1/km² (705.0/mi²). There are 562 housing units at an average density of 125.4/km² (325.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.10% White, 0.25% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 490 households out of which 34.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.4% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% are non-families. 26.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,823, and the median income for a family is $31,842. Males have a median income of $29,167 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,914. 22.5% of the population and 17.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.6% of those under the age of 18 and 18.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
