Encyclopedia > Krushevo

Kruševo is a city in Republic of Macedonia. It is the highest town in the Balkans as it is situated at an altitude of 1330 meters above the sea level. During the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising in 1903 the rebels proclaimed short lived Kruševo Republic. Having suppressed the uprising the city was almost completelly destroyed by the Ottoman army. It is home to Mečkin Kamen, a famous historical landmark which marks the spot of the Ilinden uprising of 1903. On 2 August every year, it is the site of the traditional Macedonian Independence Day celebrations which are attended by the President of Macedonia, as well as other Macedonian political leaders. Macedonia - What Went Wrong in the Last 200 Years - Part IV - The 1903 Ilinden Aftermath by Risto Stefov (8361 words)
The "Krushevo Republic" unfortunately, lasted only two weeks, but it was a glorious Republic that will forever remind the Macedonian people of their eternal struggle for independence and of their thirst for freedom.
The liberation of Krushevo imprinted on the new Macedonian generations the legacy of a timeless and irreversible march towards self-determination.
Krushevo alone was surrounded by 20,000 Turkish troops with 18 cannons against an encircled force of no more than 1,200 rebel fighters.
Krushevo by Stefanovski, Vlatko / Tadic, Miroslav CD (498 words)
It is significant, I think, that this album was titled "Krushevo," because the little town of Krushevo has been considered to be the birthplace of "Macedonian liberty" and their perennial strive for liberation and emancipation.
The connection between Krushevo as an "over-the-ages-abiding" symbol of freedom and Tadic/Stefanovski's Krushevo is in the fact that the music of this album is consciously cultural/ethnic in character, and, thus, imbued with the elements and themes of the "Macedonian saga."
And, I think, precisely because of this fact Krushevo is a "must" for all who are burdened with the noble desire to explore and understand the artistic expressions of human cultures, in order to come to appreciate those cultures and love the people they represent.
